How To Digitize Your Hand Lettering With Adobe Photoshop

In this tutorial I’m going to show you step by step how to easily digitize your hand lettering with Adobe Photoshop. There are many way to digitize your hand lettering but this one is my favorite because it’s not time consuming and it’s very easy to do.

It works really well with gritty style lettering, so if you are looking for sort of gritty outcome to your lettering, I recommend you to do it this way.

Step 1
Place your photos or scanned hand lettering piece to Photoshop. I’m going to use this piece I made earlier.1

Step 2
Open up Levels window (CTRL + L / Command + L in Mac) and adjust the sliders to get rid of the background.

Step 3
Open up Blending Options in Layer Style and adjust the sliders while holding alt key to just move one part of it.

Step 4
Create a new layer above your lettering layer and merge the layers together.

Step 5
Change the color with Color Overlay or you can use Gradient Overlay. Your digitized hand lettering is done.

Take a step further by adding backgrounds to your lettering. One of my favorite website to find backgrounds is Unsplash, they got amazing collection of high quality free stock photos for everyone to use, cheers to them!
